Peru will hold the presidency of the United Nations Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee (CTC) starting January 1st, 2018, once the Andean country takes up duties as a non-permanent member of said organization, the Foreign Affairs Ministry reported.
The designation means a recognition of Peru's experience in the fight against terrorism. Likewise, this decision consolidates the Inca nation as an actor that enjoys the trust placed by the international community in it.
The
Counter-Terrorism Committee works to strengthen the UN Member States' capacities in order to face terrorism within their borders and around the world.
Established following the September 11 terrorist attacks in the United States,
CTC is assisted by the Executive Directorate (CTED), which implements the Committee's policy decisions, conducts expert assessments and facilitates counter-terrorism assistance to countries.
Peru has also been appointed by the Security Council members to chair other subsidiary bodies.
