President Martin Vizcarra commented on the recent Constitutional Court's ruling revoking an order that kept ex-leader Ollanta Humala and his wife Nadine Heredia under prevention detention for nine months over money laundering allegations.
The statements were made Thursday after the opening of Expo Peru Norte 2018 —a business platform held in northern Lambayeque region.
When asked about the
Court's decision, the Head of State said the Executive Branch respects the independence of other State powers.
"I've said it already. This is a
Constitutional Court's decision and, obviously, the Executive Branch has to be respectful of the separation of powers," Vizcarra told the media.
As is known, Constitutional Court Head Ernesto Blume on Thursday confirmed the body's majority decision to revoke the
pre-trial detention order issued against Humala and Heredia within the framework of the Odebrecht graft case.
The Court ruled in favor of the habeas corpus petition filed by the former presidential couple's defense.
This ruling secures Humala and Heredia's release to face trial out of prison.
