Peru President announces plan to enhance archaeological site in Moquegua

15:48 | Torata (Moquegua region), May. 24.

Peruvian President Martin Vizcarra on Thursday visited Torata district —in southern Moquegua region— where he announced the restoration of Cerro Baul archaeological site.

The refurbishment will be procured through an improvement project and the creation of tourist services.

According to the Head of State, Peru is a privileged country due to its huge natural wealth, so this project —he estimates— will attract more tourists to the area and to other important destinations in the South.

"I hope you succeed and reach your goals for the good of the community, as this would reinforce the history of our region (…). This will be part of a tourism corridor in southern Peru," the dignitary commented.

Mr. Vizcarra disclosed that additional tourist destinations will be prioritized under his administration given that tourism has risen steadily, generating incomes and sources of employment, for instance at restaurants and hotels.

On the other hand, the statesman reaffirmed his Government's commitment to fighting childhood anemia, saying children are the future of the country and should be kept away from vulnerable situations.

The Peruvian leader affirmed anemia reduction efforts must involve both authorities and the population. In fact, he said the first steps to combat this condition should be taken in early childhood.

"I'm confident we are going to achieve the goals we set (…). We'll make sure the population will have better living conditions," he remarked.
