Peru President: A new political era has begun

10:27 | Lima, Apr. 23.

President Martin Vizcarra affirmed a new political era has begun in Peru, thus putting confrontation between Legislative and Executive branches aside.

In a Sunday interview with CNN en Español, he said this change in Fujimori's opposition party —led by Keiko Fujimori— will materialize through "the spirit of survival" given that elections are just around the corner.

"The population said they've had enough (of this confrontation). I'm working for Peru, and Congress must do so responsibly," Mr. Vizcarra expressed.

"Both we and they have to think about Peru. I'm sure that a new era has begun, and it is time to think about our country," he added.

The Peruvian leader stated he has not met with Fuerza Popular leader Keiko Fujimori yet but finds it necessary to change this all-against-all battle mode because "parties may disappear" if there is no such change.

He recalled the electoral campaign in which Pedro Pablo Kuczynski was elected, saying it was very close and spiraled into a major confrontation that "did not end, but continued" when the former president took office.

"This situation affected everyone because growth conditions were not in place, and the political class was not aware of reality. On March 23, when I took office in Congress, I felt we had to change and stop such confrontation condemned by the population," he said.

Mr. Vizcarra explained legislators have expressed their commitment and are doing the best they can to perform a joint action.

"We, Peruvians, are aware that if we continue on this path (of confrontation), we'll sink into the abyss," he stated.
