Peru looking to repeat victory at int'l birdwatching competition

08:00 | Lima, Apr. 24.

For the third time, Peru plans to count the largest number of bird species worldwide in a single day at the fourth edition of Global Big Day (GBD) on May 5, Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) informed.

The GBD was created with the goal of dedicating a full day to the promotion of birdwatching worldwide.

More than 144 nations take part in this event. Each participating country must collectively identify as many birds as possible.

In this regard, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Rogers Valencia highlighted the event in Peru aims to make people —foreigners and nationals— learn about the Inca country's natural and tourist diversity.

"The purpose is to encourage citizens to learn and share so that more people join the goal of preserving species," Valencia expressed.

"Global Big Day helps us bring experts, naturalists, and amateurs together, and share experiences," he added.

Within this framework, 30 out of 76 Peruvian Natural Protected Areas will be the most visited places by birdwatchers on said day.

It must be noted this international event is organized by Cornell University's laboratory in the United States and lets us know which countries are the major destinations for birdwatching.

GBD in Peru

The event in Peru is organized by Center for Ornithology and Biodiversity (Corbidi), a non-profit scientific institution composed of the most important national and foreign ornithologists who study diverse Peruvian bird species.

According to Cordibi, Peru houses 1,857 bird species and is the second leading country in the world for bird diversity.

As is known, Peru won the Global Big Day in 2015 and 2016 with 1,183 and 1,246 bird species, respectively.
