The 7th edition of Expo Cafe Peru 2017 was inaugurated on Thursday in a bid to promote domestic coffee consumption.

Expo Cafe Peru features various activities such as the 4th International Coffee Symposium, business rounds, conferences, contests and artistic shows, among others.

The event takes places at Lima's Parque de la Exposicion and runs thru October 21.

It must be noted Peru currently ranks as the world's second-largest producer and exporter of organic coffee.

Last September, President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski said his administration is working to place Peruvian coffee in the high-quality category, so it can be recognized for its unique features worldwide.

Zones

According to State-run Sierra y Selva Exportadora (Exporting Andes and Jungle) program, Peru hosts 230,000 coffee hectares distributed across three areas.

The northern zone consists of 98,000 hectares, thus accounting for 43% of the total cultivated area. This zone includes the following regions: Amazonas, Cajamarca, Piura and San Martin.

The central zone —composed of Junin, Pasco, and Huanuco— covers some 79,000 hectares, which accounts for 34% of the country's coffee crops.

On the other hand, the southern zone comprises 53,000 hectares in Apurimac, Ayacucho, Cusco, and Puno, making up 23% of the total area.

It must be taken into consideration that 85% of coffee growers own properties ranging between 0.5 and 5 hectares.

As is known, Sierra y Selva Exportadora is designed to promote economic activities —originated in Peru's Andean and jungle areas— that allow growers to attach themselves to national and international markets.
