Peru: Former presidential candidate requests new elections

16:58 | Lima, Mar. 22.

Nuevo Peru (New Peru) political party Chairwoman Veronika Mendoza on Thursday requested First-Vice President Martin Vizcarra to call early elections, guarantee the fight against corruption, as well as boost a plan to reactivate Peru's economy and employment.

At a press conference, she explained the country needs a democratic transition led by Vizcarra, who must assume the presidency of Peru following Pedro Pablo Kuczynski's resignation.

According to Mendoza, the call for early elections must be carried out by applying new rules, so that "those who caused this political crisis do not return," and to stop dirty money from entering politics.

"New elections [must be held] to renew the political class […]," she expressed.

The leftist party leader also said Vizcarra has to promote the fight against corruption. This includes defending the autonomy of the justice system —so it continues with investigations against those involved in acts of corruption—
and reviewing public-private partnerships to avoid irregular actions.

On the other hand, Mendoza proposed increasing investments in health and education, as well as removing tax exemptions for big companies as part of a plan to reactivate the economy

As is known, Mendoza ended third in the 2016 presidential elections.
