Peru's Foreign Affairs Minister Ricardo Luna will meet with United Nations (UN) senior officials, as well as UN Security Council member countries' representatives in New York City from January 3 to 8.
The cabinet member's visit to the U.S. city will begin on January 2 with his participation in the protocol ceremony marking the opening of the United Nations Security Council's annual activities, a meeting convened by the presidency of that UN body.
Given the role Peru will play as a non-permanent member of the
UN Security Council during the 2018-2019 period, Minister Luna's presence will reaffirm Peru's political commitment to the committee, as well as to international peace and security.
The trip to the United States was authorized by means of a supreme resolution published last Sunday in El Peruano official gazette.
Energy and Mines Minister Cayetana Aljovin will lead the Foreign Affairs portfolio, while Luna is overseas.
The resolution was signed by President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, Prime Minister Mercedes Araoz, and Minister Ricardo Luna.
Election
In addition to Peru, Equatorial Guinea, Cote d'Ivoire, Kuwait, and Poland were also selected.
Previously a pact had been ratified by which Italy ceded its seat at the Security Council to the Netherlands for the year 2018.
