Peru's Foreign Affairs Minister Cayetana Aljovin on Wednesday expressed confidence that President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski will survive the Parliament's impeachment vote this Thursday.
She said the move will not succeed as it is based on the same allegations as the
first motion submitted last December, which fell short of the required two-thirds vote.
"I'm confident the President will survive
this impeachment. He is facing the same accusations as those brought in the previous process. Also, I think the Congress will act responsibly and will give it a thought," she told ATV local channel.
To Aljovin, lawmakers will be cautious about the congressional
Lava Jato commission's information —regarding Kuczynski's transfers— disseminated a few days ago with the sole purpose of casting a shadow of suspicion.
Once the impeachment fails, she said, the political class needs to be aware that gaps in the Constitution cannot be used to bring about a coup d'état.
According to the government official, the Executive Branch needs to work seven times harder now in order to make up for the lost time.
When asked about the possibility of impeachment, Aljovin affirmed she
will resign from her post and will not be part of a new Cabinet if the initiative succeeds.
