Peru elects new Congress Chairman

Peruvian lawmakers elected Luis Galarreta Velarde as the new Congress Chairman for the 2017-2018 period.

Legislators cast 122 votes, with 84 of them supporting the Fuerza Popular candidate.

Mario Mantilla (Fuerza Popular) will hold Chairmanships, along with Richard Acuña (Alianza Para el Progreso) and Mauricio Mulder (APRA).

Led by the outgoing Congress Chairwoman Luz Salgado, the election ceremony took place at Congress headquarters on Wednesday morning.

Fuerza Popular, which has Parliament majority (71 out of 130), is the party founded by former presidential runner Keiko Fujimori.
