The Peruvian government aims to reduce coca-growing area by half by 2021, State-run National Commission for Development and Life without Drugs (DEVIDA) informed.
In this context, Masias said the National Strategy to Fight Drugs 2017-2021 prioritizes the reduction of coca-growing zones rather than eradication.
She also noted said efforts must include alternative development measures to prevent farmers from rejoining illicit activities.
Likewise, she underlined the initiative requires articulated efforts by all State-run sectors.
In this sense, Masias affirmed the creation of multisectoral commissions —such as CODEVRAEM and CODEHUALLAGA— is essential for bridging gaps in education, health and infrastructure in the aforementioned zones.
Lastly, she noted Peru's fight against drugs is based on four pillars. They are: reduction of supply and demand for drugs, control of drug-trafficking, as well as human development and prevention.
