The Government of Peru has agreed to New York Court’s request to extradite former chief of Peruvian Soccer Federation Manuel Burga to the United States to face charges of organized crime.
Peruvian President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski approved his extradition in a supreme resolution published by the official gazette, El Peruano.
The document bears the signatures of Mr. Kuczynski and his Ministers Marisol Perez Tello (Justice) and Ricardo Luna (Foreign Affairs).
The decree recalls Peru’s Supreme Court had approved the extradition of the country’s former football head to the United States to face charges of organized crime to the detriment of that country.
U.S. authorities shall provide appropriate protection to the extradited ex-soccer boss, in accordance with a Treaty in place and Peruvian regulations.
Furthermore, records in custody and control of Peruvian Judiciary will be handed over to the North American country.
Burga’s name came up in the investigation process in November last year, when the U.S. Department of Justice indicted 16 suspects, including some of the highest-ranking and former officials, in the FIFA corruption case.
Some of the noteworthy indictments at that time included the heads of Conmebol and Concacaf —who were detained in Switzerland in the corruption case that has rocked the world soccer organization since May last year.
