A total of 15,887,000 women reside in Peru, the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI) informed on the occasion of International Women's Day.

March 8 is an important date since it celebrates Peruvian women's achievements in economic, social, political, and cultural fields, which contribute to the country's development.

According to INEI, 12,515,000 women reside in urban areas (78.8% of the total), whereas 3,372,000 live in rural zones (21.2%).

Likewise, 32.3% of women in the Inca country are minors, 52.9% are women of childbearing age (15-49), 75.3% are old enough to carry out any economic activity (14 and above), and 11% are senior women (60 and above).

Average life expectancy

As a result of the improvement of health services, access to education and —in general— progress in people's health, Peruvians' life expectancy at birth has risen.

Thus, women in the Andean country live an average of 78 years compared to men's 72 years, INEI noted.
