Cusco Festivities' launch event held in Peru

15:13 | Lima, May. 9.

Details surrounding Cusco 2018 festivities were disclosed at Huaca Pucllana archaeological site in Lima's Miraflores district, Peru's Exports and Tourism Promotion Board (PromPeru) informed Wednesday.

As every year, the Inca city of Cusco will be dressed up in June on the occasion of its Jubilee month celebrations.

According to Municipal Company of Festivities in Cusco (Emufec), the aim of an official launch event at said site was to provide a platform that brings different Peruvian cultures together.

The ceremony was attended by Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Rogers Valencia, Cusco Mayor Carlos Moscoso, and Miraflores Mayor Jorge Muñoz, among other authorities from Lima and the Imperial City.

The launch included a ritual celebrating the birth of the Sun and its connection with the Inca culture. The act was performed by actors who play the Inca and Colla roles at Inti Raymi re-enactment, among others.

Likewise, the staging combined modern audiovisual and artistic resources: holography, projections, lighting, and music, among others, as well as the Huaca Pucllana's magical setting.

Inti Raymi

The contemporary version of Inti Raymi has been held every June 24 since 1944, when the first festivities were organized to mark Cusco's ancient origin and status as the cradle of the great Inca civilization.

The breathtaking ceremony's last edition drew more than 3,000 tourists, 94% of which were foreigners.

This is an important figure considering tourism contributes 3.9% to the Andean country's GDP and creates 1.3 million (direct and indirect) jobs.

It must be noted more than 3,750 spaces will be available for locals and tourists this year.
