Congress on Wednesday enacted the law, which grants the right to national citizenship to Peruvian parents' children born abroad, without any obstruction.

Published in official newspaper El Peruano, such bill amends Article 52 of the Constitution.

Thanks to said reform, the aforementioned article states that —from now on— "Peruvians by birth are those born in the territory of the Republic. Also, those who are born abroad to a Peruvian father or mother, registered in the corresponding register in accordance with law."

Before the reform was passed, children born to Peruvian parents —outside the Inca country— were allowed to obtain national citizenship if they had been registered at consulates before the age of 18.

In this regard, legislator and bill author Luz Salgado explained children of Peruvian citizens must have the same right to be regarded as "Peruvians by birth," even if they were born outside the Andean nation.

As is known, the citizenship amendment was passed last Thursday by Congress at a second voting session.
