Presidents Pedro Pablo Kuczynski (Peru) and Xi Jinping (China) held a bilateral meeting within the framework of APEC Summit, with the Chinese leader expressing willingness to keep working with his Peruvian peer for the sake of both nations.

During the meeting, Mr. Kuczynski praised his Chinese counterpart for being handed a second term in power.

Mr. Xi, on the other hand, expressed his readiness to articulate efforts so as to strengthen ties between the two countries.

"Allow me to congratulate you for the recently-concluded Congress, broadcast around the world," Mr. Kuczynski said, referring to the 19th National Congress of the Chinese Communist Party at which Mr. Xi was officially given a renewed mandate.

"Thank you for your congratulation, Mr. President. I also want to salute the progress made in favor of Peruvians, and I am confident your administration will experience greater success," Mr. Xi replied.

The Chinese leader admitted he is proud of deepening relations with a country, with which the Asian giant maintains historic links of friendship and cooperation.

For his part, the Peruvian affirmed he agrees with Mr. Xi that foreign trade, openness and investment should be aimed at development and the poorest sectors.

He went on to note Chinese investors' key presence in Peru's mining and infrastructure areas. "We are working. I place a strong emphasis on our close ties with China," he expressed.

Finally, Peru's Commander-in-Chief disclosed the two foreign affairs ministers will "meet [soon] at the United Nations Security Council, where we are willing to work with you."

Peru has been elected as non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for the 2018-2019 period. China is a permanent member of the Security Council since its creation in 1945.

Kuczynski-Xi meeting took place at Ariyana Danang Exhibition & Convention Center in Viet Nam.

The Peruvian leader was joined by Foreign Affairs Minister Ricardo Luna and adviser Roberto Rodriguez. Mr. Xi, on the other hand, was accompanied by Chinese Foreign Affairs Minister Wang Yi.
