A few days before celebrating National Pisco Day, Peruvian Exporters Association (ADEX) Central Exports Manager Diego Llosa reported that in the first 5 months of this year, shipments of the flagship drink abroad totaled nearly US$3.8 million, a 1% rise compared to the same period in 2023 (US$3.75 million).

Markets

According to the Adex Data Trade Business Intelligence System, the United States led the Pisco destinations ranking (US$1.418 million) between January and May 2024, with a share of 35.7%.

It was followed by Japan (US$649,693) and Spain (US$469,687). Belgium and Italy completed the top five.

The main pisco exporting companies in the aforementioned period were Destileria La Caravedo, Bodega San Isidro, Viña Tacama, Bodegas y Viñedos Tabernero, Santiago Queirolo, Bodega San Nicolas, Macchu Pisco, Destilados Premium Peru, Agricola Viña Vieja, and Bodegas Don Luis.

Every fourth Sunday in July, Peru celebrates National Pisco Day. This year it coincides with Independence Day Anniversary (July 28).

Pisco accounts for 56% of Peruvian shipments in the Pisco, Wine, Rum, and Other Spirits sector.

Event

In order to continue promoting its positioning and consumption, the guild's Pisco Committee organized an event showcasing Pisco's use in gastronomy and cocktails, how to conduct a sensory analysis, as well as providing details of its history and Designation of Origin.

The officer urged authorities to ensure the cultivation of pisco grapes in the areas with Designation of Origin: Lima, Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua, as well as in the valleys of Locumba, Sama, and Caplina in Tacna region.

Llosa said a census and close collaboration with authorities are essential for ensuring the availability of this fundamental input.

Similarly, he called for continuing to promote domestic consumption, exploring new international markets, and combating counterfeiting, with the purpose of preserving its authenticity.

In this sense, Llosa said the Adex Pisco Committee maintains close coordination with entities that guarantee its quality, with the aim of being competitive in an increasingly demanding international market.

The event received the support from the General Archive of the Nation (AGN) —an entity that presented historical documentation on production and shipping of Pisco from Ica to other ports, evidencing its origin in the region's valleys since the 16th century. The lecture was delivered by its institutional head, Ricardo Moreau.
