Peru: Construction sector up 5.5% in May 2024

17:15 | Lima, Jul. 24.

Construction sector's activity increased 5.5% in May 2024 compared to the same month last year due to greater progress on public works, the Central Reserve Bank (BCR) reported on Wednesday.

Thus, the construction sector accumulated year-on-year growth of 5.6% during the first five months of 2024.

Last May, progress of public works increased 33.1% driven by greater investment of regional governments (+66.7%), local governments (+33.9%), and the national government (+13.4%).

Depending on the type of works, investment increased in road infrastructure works, risk prevention, as well as construction of non-residential buildings and basic services.

On the other hand, domestic cement consumption decreased 1.7% last May, according to the BCR.

Unacem shipments declined 3.4% due to lower bagged dispatches (-9.1%) associated with self-construction, it indicated.

Likewise, lower demand was registered in the north (Pacasmayo, -12.9%) and south of the country (-6.7%), the BCR noted.

However, domestic cement consumption rose 1.3% during the first five months of 2024 compared to the same period of the previous year.
