Peru assumes IICA Executive Committee Chairmanship

The Peruvian Government announced that Agrarian Development and Irrigation Minister Angel Manero has been elected as the new Chairman of the Executive Committee at the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA), during the aforementioned group's 44th Regular Meeting held in San Jose, Costa Rica.

"At a time when issues of food security and sustainable development hold a strategic position on global agendas, the importance of international cooperation is highlighted," Manero stated at the beginning of this session.

"Therefore, this meeting of the IICA Executive Committee represents an excellent opportunity to continue along this path of mutual support, benefitting the agricultural and rural sectors of our countries," he added.

According to the Peruvian government official, "this is a great opportunity for the country to prove its leadership in agricultural matters, fostering sectoral strategies that enable sustainable development within member countries."

Agricultural development and rural well-being

The Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA) is the specialized agricultural agency of the Inter-American System that supports the efforts of member States to achieve agricultural development and rural well-being.

Since 1942, the IICA has accompanied its member countries with the aim of achieving an increasingly inclusive, competitive, and sustainable agriculture.

This institution provides cooperation through close and permanent work with 34 Member States, whose needs are addressed in a timely manner.

It has vast experience in topics, such as technology and innovation for agriculture, agricultural health, food quality and safety, international agricultural trade, family farming, rural development, natural resource management, and bioeconomy.

It is made up of countries such as Antigua and Barbuda, Argentina, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Dominica, the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Grenada, Guatemala, Guyana, Haiti, Honduras, Jamaica, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago, United States, Uruguay, and Venezuela.

The 44th Regular Meeting of the Executive Committee has been taking place in person at the IICA headquarters in San Jose, Costa Rica, from July 23 to 24, 2024.
