14:00 | Urubamba (Cusco region), Sep. 17.

Communities of Machu Picchu district, in Urubamba province, Cusco region, on Wednesday agreed to suspend the indefinite strike they had been observing for 72 hours and to resume train service on the Ollantaytambo–Machu Picchu Pueblo, or Aguas Calientes, railway.

In a statement, the groups indicated that they held a meeting with representatives of the Ombudsman's Office, leaders, and residents of the different communities and agreed on several points.

"We suspend our protest measure as of today, Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at 11:00 a.m., for a period of 72 hours, so that a dialogue process may take place within the framework of respect and social peace, in response to the mediation carried out by the Ombudsman's Office," the statement read.

The communities also requested that the companies operating the Ollantaytambo–Machu Picchu railway, such as Peru Rail and Inca Rail, resume their service.

At the same time, the groups urged the said institution to reschedule the progressive transfer of San Antonio de Torontoy company buses to Machu Picchu Pueblo (Aguas Calientes).

"We request that the Ombudsman's Office carry out its mediating role regarding the Hiram Bingham road issue," they reiterated.

Lastly, the communities urged local, regional, and national authorities to address the "legitimate request, related to the enabling title granted by the MPU (Urubamba Province Municipality) in favor of the company San Antonio de Torontoy."

A truce was in place until 8:00 a.m. today for the evacuation of tourists from Machu Picchu Pueblo to Ollantaytambo, which was successfully completed with the support of the National Police.

The companies operating this route have not yet confirmed the train schedules for services that will bring tourists into Machu Picchu Pueblo.

The communities of Machu Picchu are holding a protest against the company Consettur, which was supposed to provide the bus service until September 4, the date when its 30-year concession ended.
