Perumin: Wind and solar could cover 30% of Peru's electricity by 2030

18:00 | Arequipa (Arequipa region), Sep. 25.

Non-conventional renewable energies (solar and wind) aim to cover 30% of Peru's electricity generation by 2030, up from nearly 10% currently.

"We see Peru's goal of reaching 30% non-conventional renewable energy in the energy matrix by 2030 as quite achievable," Orygen CEO Marco Fragale told Andina News Agency.

"Basically, it would be with wind and solar, although there are other hybrid projects — that means sites that have both a wind farm and a solar plant; so, we generate power from both wind and sun," he added.

The CEO highlighted that non-conventional renewable energies, wind and solar, have made significant progress in recent years and will continue to do so.

"We are seeing significant growth in renewable projects, as renewable energy generation increased by over 60% last year," Fragale stated.

"That growth is also due to us, as Orygen, having brought two new plants into commercial operation: a wind farm in Marcona (Ica region) of nearly 180 megawatts and a 115-megawatt solar plant in Moquegua (region)," he added.

The executive underscored that Peru already has a fairly clean energy matrix, as it has access to hydro resources that supply more than half of the country's electricity demand.

"If we look at Peru's energy matrix, roughly 60% of the energy comes from hydropower, 30% from thermal sources, and just under 10% from non-conventional renewable energies," he detailed.

Orygen (formerly Enel Generacion Peru) is the largest private electricity generation company in Peru.
