The President of the Republic, Dina Boluarte, on Thursday stated that her government is firmly committed to teachers and education.

"Our government stands for education and for teachers; and, of course, for economic recovery and consolidation," Mrs. Boluarte said during the 2024 edition of the Palmas Magisteriales award ceremony at the Government Palace in Lima.

The Head of State highlighted the work of teachers in educating children and youth, who later become the professionals that contribute to our homeland's development.

"On behalf of Peru and our government, we reaffirm today our deepest gratitude and recognition to each of you," she expressed.

The top official recalled that at the beginning of her administration only 51% of teachers held official appointments. There are currently more than 97,000 teachers in the Public Teaching Career, reaching 71% of appointments.

The President mentioned that over S/3.087 billion (US$886 million) has been invested to improve the salaries of 426,000 teachers across the country.

The Head of State underscored that the base salary increased by 34.6%, rising from S/2,600 (US$746) to S/3,500 (US$1,005) as of November 2025.

She also emphasized that, in coordination with the private sector, 250,000 scholarships have been provided to train teachers, school administrators, and high school students in leadership, technological skills, and entrepreneurship.

During the 2024 edition of the Palmas Magisteriales awards, a special recognition was given to Everardo Zapata Santillana. He is the author of the book Coquito, through which many generations in Peru and Latin America learned to read.

"A book that has accompanied several generations of Peruvians and Latin Americans in their journey to learn reading and writing, and which today is a cultural heritage of the Nation," Mrs. Boluarte said.
