The Ministry of Defense noted that today marks World Maritime Day, established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 1978 to strengthen safety at sea and prevent pollution.

Every fourth Thursday of September, this date is observed to improve the efficiency of maritime operations, as well as to strengthen joint efforts to ensure safe and sustainable transportation.

Origin of commemoration

This day was established by the IMO —a specialized UN agency— and has been celebrated annually since 1978.

Its main goal is to protect maritime resources and promote compliance with international standards.

This year, the slogan is "Our Ocean, Our Responsibility, Our Opportunity."

It aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, particularly SDG 14: Life Below Water, which promotes the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and marine resources.

Thus, to commemorate the Day, activities will be held at the IMO headquarters, including the illumination of iconic sites and a call to participate on social media using the hashtag #WorldMaritimeDay
