Peru's Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Desilu Leon highlighted the meeting between President Dina Boluarte and Kuwait's Crown Prince, Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Mubarak Al-Sabah, as it will allow the South American country to continue advancing in negotiations to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with that nation.

The government official indicated that Kuwait is an economy with which Peru has experienced growth in bilateral trade, adding that it is interested in investing in Peruvian sectors such as energy.

Minister Leon specified that, during the meeting held in New York on Wednesday, the Head of State highlighted that Peru is a country open to investment, as well as the strength of its economy and the legal security it offers.

"In the last 15 years of bilateral relations with Kuwait, trade has increased by more than 25.6% from 2011 to 2024. We have a bilateral trade worth over US$1 billion, but we can continue to grow," she stated.

The Cabinet member also noted that Peruvian products such as lima beans, quinoa, and pomegranate have been exported to the Middle Eastern country this year.

First steps toward an FTA

The Foreign Trade and Tourism minister indicated that, during the official visit to Kuwait by Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer a few months ago, a work plan was established to advance bilateral relations with that country, which is part of the Gulf Cooperation Council.

Leon clarified that it is in this forum where free trade agreements with countries in said region are negotiated. Thus, talks are underway with a view to reaching a trade deal.

"There had already been interest in advancing an agreement, and now, with this visit by the President, political will is truly being promoted, and the Prince (of Kuwait) has expressed that we should continue working to achieve this agreement," she pointed out.
