Energy and Mines Minister Jorge Montero Cornejo has announced that Macusani Yellowcake (a subsidiary of Canadian-based American Lithium) will carry out around 300 lithium exploration drillings at the “Falchani” Project, located in Corani district, Carabaya province, Puno region, southeastern Peru.

"I met with representatives of Macusani Yellowcake, a subsidiary of the Canadian junior company American Lithium, which holds the lithium mining claims in Falchani as well as the uranium mining claims in Quelccaya," Montero told Andina News Agency.

"I told them that we need immediate investment; we are not going to wait another 10 or 15 years. We need them to invest in exploration immediately, and they have offered to carry out approximately 300 drillings over the next two or three years. That is important," he added.

Within the framework of the 37th Perumin  Mining Convention, the government official explained that these explorations are carried out to locate resources, in this case, lithium and uranium in Puno.

"We need to know how much resource we have there, because that area of Puno is so rich that it not only contains lithium but also uranium, which currently has a high market value," Montero stated.

"We have spoken with the representatives of Macusani Yellowcake, and I told them that, of course, like any mining company that complies with environmental standards and Peruvian regulations, they are welcome to invest in Peru," he added.

Lithium is currently an element of great interest. Likewise it has become a strategic resource in the space and submarine industries, as well as in batteries for cell phones, tablets, and electric cars.

It is also used in the manufacture of glass, ceramic glazes, multi-purpose lubricating greases, and the production of medicines.
