Judiciary Chairwoman Janet Tello Gilardi on Wednesday signed the Chapultepec Declaration and the Salta II Declaration, key documents for press freedom and expression.

During the ceremony, Tello Gilardi stated that the signing of these two important declarations aims to combine efforts to strengthen the principles of unrestricted respect for press freedom and freedom of expression.

"We saw that it was necessary to carry out this signing, following approval by the Judiciary Executive Council, especially for everything that falls within our responsibilities," she clarified.

The Chapultepec Declaration reaffirms that everyone has the right to seek and receive information, as well as to express and disseminate opinions freely, as no one can restrict or deny these rights.

The Second Vice-President and head of IAPA's Press Freedom and Information Commission, Carlos Jornet, thanked the Judiciary Chairwoman for signing these two important declarations that safeguard press freedom and freedom of expression in the Inter-American region.

"We highlight this gesture (signing), not only by Dr. Tello but by the entire body (Judiciary Executive Council), because we believe it is vital at this moment to reinforce these principles that are universal but are often overlooked or completely ignored," the IAPA representative stated.

After reiterating that the signing by the Judiciary is a positive gesture, Jornet described this act as historic given the situation Peru is going through.

IAPA Executive Director Carlos Lauria and Supreme Court Judge/Judiciary Executive Council Member Ramiro Bustamante Zegarra were also present during the meeting held at the Justice Palace in Lima.

The signing of this important document takes place one day after the highest judicial authority met with IAPA Chairman, Jose Roberto Dutriz Fogoelbach, who described the Judiciary as an example at the continental level for its genuine independence.
