As part of the activities taking place within the framework of the United Nations General Assembly,
Muyatwa Sitali, with the aim of consolidating international recognition of the United for Water and Sanitation Pact, promoted by Peru.
At the meeting with SWA, the most influential global network in water and sanitation worldwide, the Peruvian government official explained the importance of the Pact.
The initiative is multisectoral and seeks to close the gap in access to these basic services throughout the country, especially for the most vulnerable, with the participation of government authorities, businesses, academia, international cooperation, and civil society.
In this context, the importance of SWA support in strengthening the Technical Secretariat of the Pact and achieving international recognition was highlighted.
This support could open doors to financing from major international donors such as the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), the World Bank, the Green Climate Fund (GCF) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
To this end, the Housing sector proposed aligning actions with SWA principles, accountability mechanisms, and standards in order to position Peru as a regional benchmark in water governance with a multi-stakeholder, inclusive, and sustainable approach by 2030.
Meanwhile, the minister of Housing participated in the High-Level Roundtable on Water Reuse, a forum that brought together more than 30 representatives from governments, multilateral organizations, NGOs, and indigenous peoples, focused on promoting the circular economy in drinking water and sanitation services.
During his speech, the government official underscored that "Peru has already approved the Roadmap towards a Circular Economy in Water and Sanitation by 2030, with ambitious goals: to reuse at least 20% of treated wastewater, recover 15% of biosolids in soils, and ensure that up to 20 (service) providers generate electricity from their processes."
Thus, Peru reaffirms its commitment to transforming the sanitation sector into an engine of human development, environmental innovation, and social justice, with water as the cornerstone of national inclusion and sustainability.
