A second day of protests is taking place in Lima on Sunday, with a main gathering at San Martin Square, where citizens and social organizations have called for a march through the Peruvian capital's main streets.

The demonstrators sought to express their discontent with the policies of the Government and the Congress of the Republic.

People gathered at several points in downtown Lima and marched along the city's main streets, such as Abancay Avenue, making their protests heard.

A strong contingent of police agents is also present to maintain security and public order during the demonstration.

Several media outlets report that the Congress building was being heavily guarded by police as authorities reinforce security in the area during the march.

Earlier on Sunday, the Peruvian National Police issued a statement affirming that it guarantees and respects the fundamental right to peaceful, unarmed assembly and freedom of expression, rights it recognizes as part of collective civic practice.
