New Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer on Wednesday affirmed that there has been no change in Peru's position regarding the situation in Venezuela. In this context, he reaffirmed the Peruvian Government's firm stance in defending democracy in that country.

"I want to point out clearly that there has been no change in Peru's position regarding the situation in Venezuela. I reaffirm that we maintain a firm stance in defense of democracy in Venezuela," he told TVPeru.

The new Cabinet member highlighted the important role of his predecessor, ex-Foreign Affairs Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea, in this matter.

Similarly, Minister Schialer stressed that the Executive Branch is paying close attention to what is happening in Venezuela.

He stated that the situation in Venezuela is a matter of "high priority and importance for Peru," which has joined other nations in defending the Venezuelan people, as expressed through several communiqués.

In this regard, Schialer added that "the stance is very firm and democratic, not only on the part of the former Foreign Affairs minister but also on behalf of the Peruvian State in defense of democracy in Venezuela; we have expressed this publicly through various communiqués in Santo Domingo and in Quito, jointly with other countries."

Regarding the recent arrest warrant and search order issued against presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia in Venezuela, Minister Schialer was emphatic in stating that "Peru does not accept these types of actions and we demand full respect for the human rights of every Venezuelan (citizen)."
