Peru is a key actor in the framework of energy transition, as it produces eight of the 17 critical minerals found in the market, Energy and Mines Minister Romulo Mucho stated.

The Cabinet member affirmed that an efficient use of the resources generated by mining is necessary, which depends on the central, regional, and local governments.

The government official affirmed that around US$87 billion has been invested in mining activities in Peru since 2000.

"Indeed, in the case of copper, we have increased production gradually. If Conga and Tia Maria (mining projects) had not been delayed or halted in 2011, the story would have been different," Mucho said.

"We would be talking about a copper production of no less than 4 million tons, even more," he added.

The Minem's head affirmed that there are regions in Peru hosting very valuable mining sites, as is the case of Cajamarca, where 1 to 1.5 million tons of copper could be produced at 4 or 5 mining deposits.

"Currently, Peru is among the largest producers of the main metals (required) for energy transition. However, an investment of between US$20 billion and US$25 billion would be required if we were to produce an additional 1 million tons of fine copper in the future," he asserted.

Remarks were made on Tuesday during the first day of the 15th International Mining Meeting - Symposium organized by the National Society of Mining, Oil, and Energy (SNMPE).
