During the APEC 2024 forum, Peru will consolidate its strategic positioning in the Asia-Pacific, the world's most dynamic region, Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Elizabeth Galdo has indicated.

The Cabinet member stressed that this event is a great opportunity to place our country before the eyes of the world, through various gatherings scheduled for this year.

The Second Senior Officials' Meeting and Related Meetings (SOM2) are held at Cerro Juli Convention Center in Arequipa from May 4-18. These events will see the participation of Foreign Trade and Tourism Ministry (Mincetur) officials.

The two-week meetings will end with the Joint Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Women and Ministers Responsible for Trade on May 17.

Similarly, Minister Galdo will lead the Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) Meeting on May 17-18.

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum is made up of 21 Asia-Pacific economies.

It seeks to promote trade and investment liberalization, facilitate business, and promote technical-economic cooperation so as to achieve prosperity among member economies.

Minister Galdo reported that trade between Peru and other APEC member economies reached US$11.748 billion from January to February 2024, a 2.7% rise compared to the same period last year.

Peruvian exports to this bloc reached US$7.014 billion in the first two months of this year, up by 6%.

Since its incorporation in 1998, Peru's foreign trade with other APEC member economies has increased tenfold thru 2023, meaning a 9.5% average annual growth.

Last year alone, APEC accounted for 67% of Peru's trade with the rest of the world.

To date, our country has negotiated bilateral and plurilateral free trade agreements with 14 APEC economies, including the United States, China, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Japan, South Korea, and others.

Under the objective of continuing to boost the country's commercial integration, and thus improve the conditions for Peruvian products, Peru is currently negotiating the signing of trade agreements with two economies of the group: Hong Kong and Indonesia.

Similarly, the optimization of the Free Trade Agreement with China is being negotiated.
