Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer highlighted Ambassador Ana Maria Sanchez's extensive career, commitment to multilateralism, and deep knowledge of the inter-American system, as he presented her candidacy for the position of Assistant Secretary General of the OAS for the 2025-2030 term to the hemispheric organization's members.

During an extraordinary session of the Permanent Council held in Washington, D.C., on Monday, the Peruvian minister officially presented the candidacy, emphasizing that it reflects Peru's commitment to the OAS' values and principles.

Similarly, the Cabinet member stated that the diplomat is an ideal figure, with the leadership and experience to assume this high responsibility and support the Secretary General in generating consensus and innovative solutions.

In turn, Ambassador Sanchez —who served as member of Peru's Permanent Mission to the OAS for over five years— emphasized that, if elected, her tenure will focus on delivering tangible results for citizens of the hemisphere through more agile, participatory, and efficient processes.

The Peruvian candidate emphasized the importance of strengthening mechanisms for citizen participation in public policymaking.

Likewise, Ambassador Sanchez stated that she will promote an inclusive and intersectional vision that gives voice to historically excluded sectors.

This election will be held on May 5. If elected, the diplomat would become the first woman and the first Peruvian to hold this high-ranking position within the OAS.

The candidacy of former Foreign Affairs Minister Ana Maria Sanchez reflects a vocation for public service and a firm defense of international law —principles that have guided the ambassador's diplomatic career for over four decades.
