During the ministerial meeting alongside the United Nations General Assembly, Foreign Affairs Minister Elmer Schialer, joining President Dina Boluarte, highlighted the upcoming Community of Latin American and Caribbean States–European Union (CELAC-EU) Heads of State Summit.

The Peruvian diplomat stressed that the summit is crucial to boosting bi-regional cooperation.

He stated that the goal is to tackle more effectively urgent challenges such as drug trafficking and organized crime.

In New York, the ambassador noted that the growing European illicit drug market carries a very high human, social, and environmental cost for Latin American and Caribbean producing countries, such as Peru.

He indicated that, for this reason, the Santa Marta summit must reaffirm Europe's stronger commitment to technical cooperation and information sharing in order to tackle this scourge effectively.

Cooperation with ASEAN

The Peruvian diplomat on Wednesday also took part in the 8th ASEAN-Pacific Alliance Ministerial Meeting.

At the event, government official underscored the commitment to deepen cooperation and dialogue between the two regions.

He stressed that, for Peru, the Asia-Pacific region is a priority in its foreign policy, as reflected by being the first Latin American country to accredit an ambassador to ASEAN.

The Cabinet member emphasized that Peru fosters multilateral initiatives within the Alliance, such as the Free Trade Agreement with Singapore.

He added that, in terms of connectivity, the Chancay Multipurpose Port—which shortens shipping time from South America to Asia—strengthens trade ties, generating growth and development for the region.

The Peruvian agenda also included the high-level event on climate action and the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.
