Foreign Trade and Tourism Minister Desilu Leon met with the official representative of New7Wonders in Peru, Juan Cesar Zubieta, to address matters related to ensuring the continuity of Machu Picchu's recognition as a "Wonder of the World."

During the gathering, the government official highlighted the importance of maintaining direct dialogue with this international organization.

Likewise, the Cabinet member reaffirmed the Peruvian government's political will to ensure the responsible and sustainable management of the Inca citadel.

"Machu Picchu is a source of pride for Peru, and we must protect it with the utmost responsibility. We value New7Wonders' interest in accompanying us in this effort," she underscored.

In turn, Zubieta welcomed the openness shown by the sector and stressed the need to take measures so as to address the current challenges facing Machu Picchu.

"We have found in Minister Leon the political will to lead this process, and we reaffirm our commitment to actively collaborate," the New7Wonders representative stated.

The session addressed complementary strategies, such as twinning Machu Picchu with other Wonders of the World —including the Great Wall of China.

It further discussed the recognition of the Amazon as a Natural Wonder, which will make it possible to expand cooperation with this international organization.

Moreover, they discussed promoting an upcoming meeting that would bring together the Culture and Environment sectors.

The aim is to evaluate New7Wonders' technical proposals to harmonize standards with other Wonders of the World and to establish the working framework of a multisectoral roundtable.

With this meeting, the Government of Peru and New7Wonders reaffirm their commitment to preserving the cultural, natural, and historical value of Machu Picchu and the Amazon.

They also seek to ensure their positioning as iconic tourist destinations of worldwide prestige.
