Peru announced the candidacy of Ambassador and former Foreign Affairs Minister Ana Maria Sanchez for the position of
Deputy Secretary General for the 2025-2030 term.
The
Ministry of Foreign Affairs highlighted that the Peruvian candidate has an outstanding professional career related to integration, regional cooperation, and economic development.
In this regard, the government agency stated that her leadership will help advance the objectives pursued by the regional organization for the benefit of all its members.
Likewise, the Ministry emphasized that her candidacy reflects Peru's commitment to the OAS' four pillars —democracy, human rights, security, and development— as well as to its institutional framework, which constitutes a valuable heritage of the hemisphere.
Ambassador Sanchez is a career diplomat with notable experience in public, administrative, and budget management.
Combined with her proven commitment to the OAS' fundamental principles and values, this positions her as an ideal candidate to strengthen the organization's role and response in a context of global and regional challenges.
Peru is confident that her candidacy will significantly contribute to strengthening the OAS institutionally and calls on member states to support this nomination in favor of multilateralism and development across the continent.
If elected, Ambassador Sanchez would become the first woman to hold this high-ranking position in 40 years, a milestone that would reaffirm the OAS' commitment to gender equity and the inclusion of diverse perspectives in decision-making.
Ana Maria Sanchez was the first female career diplomat to be appointed Peru's Foreign Affairs Minister, a position she held from 2015 to 2016.
