Peru and U.S. strengthen cooperation on security, defense, and trade at UN

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Ambassador Elmer Schialer held a full schedule of bilateral meetings in New York on Friday, during the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly.

During meetings with the United States, Angola, Mongolia, Saudi Arabia, Brunei Darussalam, South Korea, and Austria, the Peruvian government official highlighted Peru's role as a reliable partner for trade, security, and investment.

The bilateral strategic partnership was reaffirmed at the meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.

Minister Schialer expressed Peru's willingness to strengthen cooperation on security, the joint fight against transnational organized crime and drug trafficking, as well as collaboration in the defense sector.

He also reiterated the South American country's interest in attracting greater U.S. investment in strategic sectors such as infrastructure and critical minerals.

The United States is the fourth-largest foreign investor.

Therefore, the Peruvian diplomat highlighted the importance of initiating negotiations for a Double Taxation Elimination Agreement to promote further investment.

Additionally, Peru signed a visa exemption agreement for diplomatic passports with Angola's Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, Esmeralda Mendonça.

Likewise, a strategic partnership between the Ports of Chancay and Lobito was promoted, strengthening trade routes in the Global South.

During the meeting with his Mongolian counterpart, Battsetseg Batmunkh, Minister Schialer highlighted initiatives for the mutual benefit of the Ordinary Visa Exemption Agreement signed in 2021.

Furthermore, the Peruvian career diplomat held a meeting with his Saudi counterpart, Adel al-Jubeir, highlighting progress toward a General Cooperation Agreement and an energy cooperation covenant to attract investment into the mining sector.

Meanwhile, with Brunei's Second Foreign Affairs Minister, Erywan Yusof, mutual interest was confirmed in expanding trade ties and exploring cooperation opportunities in the hydrocarbons sector.

Lastly, the Peruvian minister highlighted to South Korean Foreign Affairs Minister Cho Hyun the progress of the Digital Government Cooperation Center and the solid legal framework for promoting investment between the two countries.

With Austria's Federal Minister for European and International Affairs Beate Meinl-Reisinger, the interest in diversifying Peru's export offerings was emphasized.

The recent Political Consultations Mechanism meeting in Lima was also celebrated, strengthening ties between the two countries.
