Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Javier Gonzalez-Olaechea took the floor at the extraordinary session of the Organization of American States (OAS) Permanent Council, convened to address Venezuela's general election results.

The session took place in Washington, D.C., United States, on Wednesday.

Previously, OAS Permanent Council members voted on a draft resolution regarding the situation in the South American country.

The voting was necessary because there was no consensus among representatives on the final document, which urged Venezuela's National Electoral Council (CNE) to present the records declaring Nicolas Maduro as the winner, amid allegations of fraud against opposition presidential candidate Edmundo Gonzalez.

Additionally, at the request of significant Venezuelan political actors, the draft resolution proposed a comprehensive verification of the results in the presence of independent observers, among other points.

On this occasion, 17 countries (including Peru) voted in favor, while 11 abstained and 5 were absent, resulting in the document not being approved.

Following the voting session, the representatives of participating countries issued their statements.

Minister Gonzalez-Olaechea began his participation by expressing his solidarity and that of Peru with Edmundo Gonzalez, Maria Corina Machado, and the millions of Venezuelans who aspire to live in freedom and not under the oppression of Maduro's regime and Chavismo, which have remained in power for 25 years.

The Peruvian government official also stated that Venezuela's President-elect is Edmundo Gonzalez, the candidate of the Democratic Unity Platform —an opposition coalition.
