Peru: Public investment up 33.37% in July 2024, maintains favorable trend

Public investment reached an execution of S/4.694 billion (US$1.265 billion) in July of this year, a growth of 33.37% compared to the amount registered in the same month of 2023 (S/3.519 billion = US$948 million), according to figures from the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

The trajectory of public investment so far this year is as follows: January (+135.8%), February (+38.7%), March (+9.34%), April (+7.63%), May (39.4%), and June (+5.13%).

Public investment thus maintained a favorable trend and accumulated eight consecutive months of expansion.

The national government registered S/1.903 billion (about US$513 million) in public investment last July, a 27.49% growth compared to the same month in 2023, when it reached S/1.493 billion (about US$402 million).

Meanwhile, public investment by regional governments totaled S/1.235 billion (about US$333 million) last July, registering a 59.02% increase compared to the same month in 2023, when it reached S/777.13 million (about US$209 million).

In turn, public investment by local governments amounted to S/1.554 billion (about US$419 million) in July of this year, advancing 24.44% compared to the same month in 2023, when it totaled S/1.249 billion (about US$336 million).

Background

It should be noted that public investment reached S/50.217 billion (about US$13.528 billion) in 2023, marking an 8.8% rise compared to the previous year.

Certainly, it reached S/46.592 billion (about US$12.552 billion) in 2020, a 20% increase over 2021, when it totaled S/39.102 billion (about US$10.534 billion).

During 2020 —the pandemic year— public investment execution reached S/28.330 billion (about US$7.632 billion); while it totaled S/32.288 billion (about US$8.698 billion) in 2019 —a figure that exceeded the amount registered in 2018 (S/32.284 billion = US$8.697 billion).

Public investment recovered in 2017 and grew by 8.7%, after two years of decline, reaching S/28.406 billion (about US$7.652 billion).

Public investment execution totaled S/31.608 billion (about US$8.515 billion) in 2014, but then fell to S/30.609 billion (about US$8.246 billion) in 2015 and to S/27.205 billion (about US$7.329 billion) in 2016.
