A street named 'Peru' inaugurated in New York, U.S.

Peru will celebrate its 203rd Independence Anniversary this Sunday, July 28, and will do so having received, once again, an international honor: the naming of a street in its honor. It is located in the vibrant Jackson Heights neighborhood, in Queens, New York City, United States.

The naming of Calle Peru (Peru Street) —located at the intersection of 85th Street and Northern Blvd.— took place on July 20 thanks to an initiative by the Peruvian Civic Center, supported by the Peruvian Consulate in the North American city.

In remarks to the Andina News Agency, Peru's Deputy Consul General based in New York City, Minister Enri Prieto, said "the ceremony was a celebration," which garnered significant attention from many media outlets and various digital platforms.

In this regard, he emphasized emotionally that this is the first street named Peru in this major U.S. city.

"This was a significant milestone because the borough of Queens is where the largest number of Peruvian citizens are located in this New York jurisdiction," he pointed out.

Prieto indicated that the Peruvian community has been established in Jackson Heights for almost 30 years, which proves that it is one of the points with the highest concentration of compatriots in the area.
