Peru: Interior Ministry eradicates around 8,000 ha of illegal coca crops so far in 2024

10:36 | Lima, Jul. 1.

The Ministry of Interior (Mininter) reported that, since the start of operations by the Special Project for the Control and Reduction of Illegal Crops in Alto Huallaga (Corah) last February, 7,772.13 hectares of illicit coca leaf crops have been eradicated to date.

According to the recent Corah report, these operations involved 3,040 plots, also managing to eliminate 20 square meters of seedlings in the operational axes of Constitucion, in Huanuco and Pasco regions, and Atalaya, in the province of the same name in Ucayali region.

Thanks to these actions against the criminal drug-trafficking chain, the production of 71.20 metric tons of cocaine hydrochloride was prevented —a 31.09% advance towards the annual target of eradicating 25,000 hectares of illegal coca crops.

Supported by members of the Peruvian National Police (PNP) Anti-Drug Directorate (Dirandro), it has been so far possible to locate and destroy 12 clandestine rustic drug production laboratories. It represents a continuous blow to those criminal organizations.

The efforts to eradicate illegal coca crops are carried out in a sustained manner, within the framework of the National Anti-Drug Policy by 2030, led by the sector headed by Minister Juan Jose Santivañez, in order to relentlessly combat drug trafficking and related crimes, the Mininter indicated.
