Despite the disqualification imposed by Congress on him for the exercise of any public function, Peru's former top official Martin Vizcarra announced he will run as a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic in the general elections to be held in 2026.

"We are going to be candidates in 2026," Vizcarra told reporters.

"We have a collective, a very important citizenry supporting our candidacy (…) We have all the willingness to participate," he expressed.

In that regard, Vizcarra said, "we are going to work towards that in a responsible manner."

Context and disqualification

The former president faces a 10-year disqualification from holding any public office imposed by Parliament in May 2022 for not having resigned from the board of directors and management department of one of his companies when assuming the position of Transportation-Communications minister in 2016.

The Judiciary has denied Vizcarra's request to overturn said disqualification.

Remarks were made during the protest march on political and labor demands called by the General Confederation of Workers of Peru (CGTP), which took place in Lima and other parts of the country.

As is known, Martin Vizcarra was sworn in as President of the Republic on March 23, 2018, to replace resigning Pedro Pablo Kuczynski.

Vizcarra was impeached and removed from office by Congress on November 9, 2020.
