Peruvian President Ollanta Humala's visit to Japan in May will strengthen friendship and cooperation ties between both countries and promote Japanese investment in Peru, according to Japanese Ambassador in Lima, Masahiro Fukukawa.
The diplomat said Wednesday that the bilateral economic complementation agreement, in force since March 1, and next month's presidential visit show the good level of bilateral relations.
"We hope that this visit will strengthen ties of friendship and cooperation between both countries," said Fukukawa, during a ceremony in honor of the Chavin de Huantar commando unit, who on Apr. 22, 1997 carried out a raid to free hostages held by the MRTA group in the Japanese ambassador's residence in Lima.
In his speech, the Japanese diplomat paid tribute to the military commandos and thanked everyone who contributed to the solution of this crisis.
The event was attended by Cardinal Juan Luis Ciprini, lawmakers Kenyi Fujimori and Maria Luisa Cuculiza, former presidential candidate Keiko Fujimori, ex-hostage Luis Giampietri and military officers involved in the Chavin de Huantar operation.
