Peru: Remarkable quotes from Kuczynski's resignation speech

19:14 | Lima, Mar. 21.

President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski announced his resignation in a televised address to the nation on Wednesday afternoon.

Below is a list of the most notable remarks made by the Peruvian leader.

- "On July 28, I took over the Presidency of the Republic —mandated by the people— which I have been carrying out giving my best, despite the constant obstacles and attacks to which I have been subjected by the legislative majority since the first day of my administration."

- "Faced with this difficult situation that has been created, which unfairly makes me seem guilty of acts I have not participated in, I think the best thing for the country is that I resign the Presidency of the Republic."

- "I do not want to be an obstacle for the country as it finds its path to unity and harmony that it sorely needs, and that I was denied."

- "I do not want the country, nor my family, to continue suffering through the uncertainty of recent times."

- "There will be an orderly power transition as stipulated in the Constitution."

- "I thank all those who helped me in my two campaigns, those who have worked as ministers, lawmakers, collaborators, and those who helped me in previous democratic governments."

- "Thank you all. Thank you with all my heart."

- "I have worked almost 60 years of my life with full honesty. The opposition has tried to portray me as a corrupt person and managed to affect a group of simple and honest people who work in my house, getting them unfairly involved in this plot to destroy the government."

- "I categorically reject these uncorroborated claims and reaffirm my commitment to an honest, moral and just Peru for all."

- "I have submitted the original resignation letter to Congress […], in which I step down as Constitutional President of the Republic. I will always be committed to Peru's development."

- "Given this crisis that has been generated by subjective political acts, it is important for our nation to embark on constitutional political reforms that will let us avoid this difficult situation and start a new chapter towards progress and justice."

- "God bless Peru."
