Officials from Michiquillay and La Encañada communities on Wednesday arrived at the Government Palace to express gratitude to President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski for the awarding of Cajamarca region-based Michiquillay mining project.

Southern Peru Copper Corporation last Tuesday won said bidding process by presenting a US$400 million transfer price, and higher royalty payments (3%).

As is known, said mega project includes a porphyry copper deposit featuring minerals such as copper, gold, silver, and molybdenum. Corresponding investment entails some US$2 billion.

Likewise, Michiquillay and La Encañada communities will —socially and economically— benefit from the concession thanks to labor and services recruitment.

"[…] We are very committed to the project's development. We want this project to become important to our community, our district, our region, and also to the country," said Jesus Diaz, Michiquillay's Central Committee representative.

For his part, the President affirmed this mining venture is important for the northern Andean region's development. In this sense, he highlighted the need for the corporation to create jobs in the direct influence area.

"Let's not forget there are people who oppose all of this […]. You must be strong. We will support you, so this [project] moves forward," the Head of State concluded.
