President Martin Vizcarra on Tuesday urged Peruvians to join efforts and work collectively with the purpose of fighting poverty in the Inca country.
When asked about the 2017 National Household Survey (
Enaho) —which revealed 375,000 Peruvians left the middle class to fall into poverty— Mr. Vizcarra noted these figures are a wake-up call to put confrontation aside and jointly
fight this problem.
"With these figures, there is no room or time for confrontation. All Peruvians must be united against poverty (…)," the statesman expressed.
According to the Head of State, it is unacceptable the country's poverty rate has increased since the
objective should be to lower it every year, as well as reverse those indicators by relying on everyone's efforts.
Based on Enaho's figures, poverty rate in the South American country stood at 21.7% in 2017 (around seven million Peruvians), up by 1% from the previous report.
It must be noted this survey was conducted by the National Institute of Statistics and Informatics (INEI).
The study also showed Peru's monetary poverty rate increased for the first time in the current millennium.
