Peru: Pope returns to Lima after Puerto Maldonado visit

Argentine Pope Francis has returned to the Peruvian capital following an intense visit to the Amazon city of Puerto Maldonado.

According to schedule, the Holy Father carried out a series of activities involving native communities and other residents of the rainforest area.

He arrived in Madre de Dios region after 10:10 AM. Upon arrival, he was received by Governor Luis Otsuka, Puerto Maldonado Bishop David Martinez, and other authorities.

In his first event of the day, Francis met with indigenous peoples' representatives at Madre de Dios Coliseum.

Afterwards, he held an audience with Puerto Maldonado locals at the Esplanade of Jorge Basadre Institute.

He also visited El Principito children's shelter, where he was welcomed by a group of children and youths.

Later, the Supreme Pontiff had lunch with indigenous peoples' representatives at Apaktone Pastoral Center —2.5 km away from Puerto Maldonado city.

Finally, he took a Latam aircraft on route to Lima, where he is slated to meet with President Kuczynski at the Government Palace.
