Peru, Indonesia seek enhanced coordination to negotiate trade deal

10:37 | Lima, May. 24.

Peruvian Foreign Affairs Minister Nestor Popolizio received his Indonesian counterpart Ambassador Retno Marsudi on Wednesday, thus marking the first visit of a foreign affairs minister from the Asian nation to Peru since the establishment of diplomatic relations 42 years ago.

Both government officials stressed the importance of bringing new business opportunities and taking advantage of the existing potential and complementarities between the two economies.

Within this framework, they agreed to intensify coordination for a quick start of negotiations towards a trade agreement that will lay the foundations to elevate the bilateral relationship to a new level of cooperation.

Likewise, the authorities agreed to move forward with the negotiations of cooperation mechanisms regarding fishing and tourism matters.

At the regional level, the ministers discussed the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum and the possibilities for cooperation between the Pacific Alliance and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

Another issue discussed at the meeting was the attempt of Peru to sign the Friendship and Cooperation Treaty with such regional intergovernmental organization.

In this regard, Indonesia's Ambassador expressed her support to Peru.

At the multilateral level, they noted the convergence of positions on issues addressed at the UN Security Council —mainly last April, when Peru held the presidency of this body— condemning the use of chemical weapons and emphasizing these crimes must not go unpunished.
