Peru: Hearing on Toledo's habeas corpus petition set for June 12

12:38 | Lima, May. 25.

The hearing on the habeas corpus petition filed by former President Alejandro Toledo —for alleged violation of his right to defense and guarantees of due process— is slated for June 12.

The hearing was set by the Third Criminal Chamber of the Lima Superior Court of Justice for 9:00 AM at the Anselmo Barreto headquarters in Lima.

Toledo's defense filed the habeas corpus against ex-President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski, as well as his former ministers Enrique Mendoza and Cayetana Aljovin.

Such legal action came after the signing of a supreme resolution authorizing a government request to extradite the fugitive ex-leader.

As is known, Kuczynski served as Prime and Finance minister to Alejandro Toledo's administration.

Case

Toledo is accused of having allegedly received US$20 million in bribes from the Brazilian construction giant Odebrecht to secure the Inter-Oceanic Highway contract, a major infrastructure venture connecting Peru and Brazil.

It must be noted this transaction was made when he was President of Peru (2001-2006).

In this sense, the former leader is indicted on charges of collusion, money laundering, and influence peddling.

As a result, Peruvian authorities ordered his preventive detention last year and issued an international arrest warrant for extradition purposes. He is believed to be in the United States.

The ex-President denies said charges and claims to be a victim of political persecution.
