Peru's Women and Vulnerable Populations Minister Ana Maria Choquehuanca called on the Organization of American States (OAS) to put up a frontal fight aimed at eradicating violence against female citizens.
Although the Americas has one of the most advanced legislation on women's rights, 14 of the 25 nations —with the highest femicide rates in the world— are located in Latin America and the Caribbean.
"There is still a lot we can do to fight
violence against women, and I believe our countries' commitment must improve [...]," the minister underlined.
In this context, the official noted said improvement must involve Finance and Justice Ministries, as well as the Judicial Branch.
As President of the
Inter-American Commission of Women (CIM), Choquehuanca also deemed as key the Education Ministries' role in undertaking efforts to promote equality, non-discrimination, as well as zero tolerance to violence.
Likewise, she pointed out that neither institutions nor
laws —on their own— will transform reality. It requires the articulated and permanent participation of women and their
organizations.
"The actions implemented by CIM have been echoed and rooted in thousands of women in our region who, from their various positions [...], have aimed at achieving gender equality, progress, women empowerment, and eradicating violence," she said.
It must be noted Peru chairs the specialized commission since 2016 for a 3-year term.
