Peru's Armed Forces will help the National Police (PNP) implement the General Plan of Operations known as "Pope Francis' Visit," within the framework of activities the Supreme Pontiff will carry out in Lima, Trujillo and Puerto Maldonado next January.
According to a supreme resolution published on Thursday in El Peruano official gazette, the Army's efforts are intended to support PNP's mission but do not replace the active participation of the police institution.
This way, PNP remains —at all times— in charge of ensuring domestic order.
Likewise, the document notes the Armed Forces are authorized to support operations of prevention, security, and maintenance of public order, as well as to intervene in case of risk or threat during the Supreme Pontiff's visit.
The "Pope Francis' Visit" plan —which will be implemented on January 15-22, 2018— involves security services and prevention measures to ensure public order.
It must be noted these actions seek to contribute to the proper functioning of basic public services, as well as to monitor strategic points, thus allowing the normal development of activities.
